Named after two real dogs: the story behind Maggie
Key facts
- Maggie is the founder's Labrador and Leo is the founder's Beagle. The app is named after Maggie and the AI companion after Leo.
- The app began as a fix for one household's shoebox of vaccine cards, prescriptions and half-remembered dates.
- Records live on your phone first, so the app works offline and syncs later.
- Leo reads your dog's own records, never diagnoses, and tells you when it is time to see a vet.
- Maggie is free to start, with no sign-in needed to set up your first pet.

Maggie is a Labrador and Leo is a Beagle. They are the founder’s own dogs, and the app exists because of them: it is named after Maggie, and the AI companion inside it is named after Leo. Every app screenshot needs example pets, and ours are always the same two. They are not stock characters. Here is how two family dogs turned a shoebox of paperwork into a pet health app.
It started with a shoebox
Like most households, ours kept pet paperwork the way everyone does: a shoebox of vaccine cards, a photo of a prescription somewhere in a camera roll, a deworming date remembered as “sometime around Holi, I think”. Two dogs, two schedules, several family members, and nobody quite sure who gave the last flea treatment or when the next booster was due.
None of this is dramatic until it matters. A kennel asks for proof of kennel cough vaccination and you spend an evening digging. A vet asks when the limping started and you genuinely cannot remember. A dose gets skipped because everyone assumed someone else had done it.

One place, built properly
Maggie the app began as a fix for that household, and its priorities still show that origin:
- The records live on your phone. Clinics have patchy signal and paperwork happens in waiting rooms, so the app works offline first and syncs later. We explain why in why offline-first matters.
- The household can share one record. On Pro, one 6-letter code brings the family in, and everyone sees the same records and reminders on their own phones after syncing.
- Reminders respect real life. They arrive ahead of the due date, and a reminder set for a time of day follows your local clock when you travel. More on that in medication reminders that survive time zones.
Then came Leo
The second problem was harder. At 11pm, when a dog is scratching or has eaten something questionable, most of us end up searching the internet and finding either terrifying worst cases or generic advice written for no dog in particular.
Leo, named after the Beagle who prompted many of those searches, is our answer: an AI companion who has actually read your dog’s records. He knows the breed, the age, the weight history and the allergies, because you logged them. He also knows what he is not. Leo never diagnoses, never prescribes, and tells you when it is time to see a real vet. If a message looks like an emergency, a rule-based check answers first with first-aid steps and who to call, before any AI runs. You can read exactly how those guardrails work in why Leo won’t diagnose your dog and on our safety page.
What Maggie does today
Every feature came from a real gap in caring for two dogs. Here is what the app covers now:
| The old problem | What Maggie does |
|---|---|
| Vaccine cards in a shoebox | A vaccine tracker with doses, dates and photos of the clinic record |
| ”Who gave the flea tablet?” | Medication reminders and a dated log of what was given |
| ”When did the limping start?” | A pet diary for pee, poop, water and vomit, plus meal, walk and weight entries |
| Guessing at portion sizes | Weight charts with a WSAVA body condition score, and feeding tools |
| Briefing a sitter by text message | A pet passport: a shareable summary of your dog’s essentials |
| Searching the internet at 11pm | Leo, who answers from your dog’s own records |
Out of the shoebox in one evening
If your pet paperwork lives in a box, you do not need to enter everything at once. Start with what you would need in a hurry:
- Add your dog. Name, breed, birthday and a photo. Maggie seeds sensible care defaults for you.
- Enter the vaccine history. Copy each dose and date from the cards, and take a photo of each card.
- Add current medicines and the next flea, tick and worming dates, so reminders start now.
- Log today’s weight. It starts the trend line.
- Keep the paper originals. Disaster planners such as Ready.gov advise keeping copies of your pet’s records in an emergency kit, and a clinic or border may still ask for the signed paper.
Everything else, old vet visits and past illnesses, can follow later, a few entries at a time.
Why this matters for you
Plenty of pet apps are built as products first and tools second. Maggie is the reverse. Every feature exists because a real household with real dogs needed it, from the vaccine schedule that survives a missed dose to the passport you can hand a sitter.
Maggie the Labrador and Leo the Beagle get no say in the roadmap, but they remain the standard: if a feature would not have helped us take better care of them, it does not ship.
The app is free to start, with no sign-in needed. If your pet paperwork currently lives in a shoebox, we built this for you.
